There are many different types of electric vehicles, and likewise many different options for EV chargers. Do you know which charger you need to choose for charging your car? At present, the common EV chargers in the market include type 1 and type 2 chargers. There are many friends who are curious about what is the difference between type 1 and type 2 EV chargers. Now FAFA-E is here to answer your questions.

What are the features of Type 1 EV charger?

Type 1 EV charger is the standard for EV charging in the US and Japan. It has a single-phase plug, 5-pin hole design, uses AC (alternating current) power, and has an output power range of 3.7KW to 7.4KW.

Type 1 chargers have a latch lock and the plug is firmly in place throughout the charging process, although the latch prevents the cable from accidentally falling out, anyone can remove the charging cable from the car. the downside of Type 1 chargers is that they are slow to charge, providing only 12.5-25 miles of range per hour of charging.

Type 1 chargers are normal wall-mounted power outlets and may work for vehicles with smaller battery packs like plug-in hybrids, but for faster charging, a Type 2 charger is recommended.

What are the features of Type 2 EV chargers?

The Type 2 EV charger is a European standard charging configuration with a 7-pin design that differentiates it from the Type 1 charger in that it can accommodate both single-phase and three-phase power supplies with an output of up to 43KW.

The Type 2 charger has a locking pin that also holds the plug in place during charging, so that only the owner can unplug the charger from the car, making it safer to use at public charging stations. It charges faster than the Type 1 charger, providing a range of 30-90 miles per hour of charging.

Public charging stations that are compatible with Type 2 chargers are common and can be installed directly in the home. The charging speed of a Type 2 charger for home use is closely related to factors such as the charger you install and the local power grid.

All in all, Type 2 chargers charge faster than Type 1 chargers and have more safety and protection features.
